TITUS PACED THE RAMPARTS, keeping an eye on the approaching storm. It was sweeping in from the North and had already been preceded by a powerful wave that had slammed against the cliffs, spraying the fortress with water and forcing his men to rekindle the fires and torches.

Though the temperature had risen at least ten degrees, Titus repressed a shiver, unable to shake a foreboding feeling. He sensed a change in the air, and not just from the impending storm. He inhaled a deeply disturbing coppery scent that reminded him of stale blood and something else. Something foreign. It had to have been dark magic. He rested his hand on a ballista, following the direction of the spear that was aimed at the sky. The clouds were heavy and dark, obscuring the moon and making it impossible to see any distance. Milas and his dragons would soon be upon them. Beatris had said Milas flew too fast. If she was right, and he did have the blood of Kyan in his veins, he would be the defenders’ best chance at taking down the beast.

He was not pleased when he heard a loud quack. The old woman was heaving herself up the stairs, her menagerie in her wake.

He rushed to meet her, helping her up the final steps. Two soldiers stood below her.

“We tried to stop her,” one said. “She wouldn’t listen.”

“Return to your posts,” Titus said gruffly before turning to Beatris. “Why are you not below with the others, and who is watching Theron?”

“There are widows watching Theron. He still sleeps.” She hobbled over to the wall and dropped heavily onto a bench. “The white sorceress might not make it in time, and you need a witch.”

A goat meandered past, leaving a trail of shit balls in its wake.

Titus had to work to reign in his temper; the old woman was trying his patience. “What I need is for you to get below, where it’s safe.”

She vehemently shook her head. “The wind has given me disturbing news.”

His pulse quickened. “What?”

Reaching into her pocket, she pet the head of a little black rabbit. “His army has deserted him.”

He quirked a brow. “That’s a good thing, isn’t it?”

“He’s created a new army, an army of the dead.”

Titus’s world came to a grinding halt. An army of the dead? Though it shouldn’t have made sense, he somehow knew what she meant. “How?”

“The life water,” she answered. “It turns corpses into unholy creatures, and they will be here before daybreak.”

Titus ran his tongue along the roof of his mouth, unable to draw moisture as sludge drained into his veins. “How do I fight them?”

She pulled her hand away from the rabbit, and it ducked down with a squeal. “Fire,” she whispered.

Titus’s shoulders stiffened with determination. “Then we shall give them an inferno.”
